What hard water does to a drain

Every pass of mineral-heavy water deposits a microscopic film of calcium and magnesium on the pipe wall. One pass is nothing. Fifteen or twenty years of passes is a rind — hard, rough scale coating the inside of the pipe.

That does two things, and the second one is the one nobody explains:

It narrows the pipe. A drain that was two inches across is measurably less. Water moves slower. Because it’s gradual, nobody notices until it’s bad.

It roughens the pipe. This is the real problem. Smooth pipe sheds debris; scaled pipe grabs it. Every bit of hair, soap and grease that goes past now has something to catch on. The scale doesn’t just shrink your drain — it turns the pipe wall into velcro.

Which is why drains in well-water homes clog repeatedly. It isn’t bad luck, and you’re not doing anything wrong. The pipe has become a trap.

Why snaking keeps not working

Being honest here, because it costs us the easy repeat job.

A snake punches a hole through the blockage. For a single sink with something stuck in it, that’s exactly right and we’ll do it happily.

But a snake does essentially nothing to mineral scale. It bores a channel through the middle of the clog and leaves the rind on the wall completely intact. The drain runs again — for a while. Then the rough pipe catches the next thing, and you’re standing over the same sink a few months later.

If you’re clearing the same Anderson drain twice a year, you don’t have a clog problem. You have a scale problem. Snaking it again is paying to be back here next season.

Hydro jetting is what actually removes it. High-pressure water scours the wall back to bare pipe. The scale comes off, the pipe returns to its true diameter, and — critically — it goes back to being smooth, so it stops catching things.

The bigger conversation: it isn’t just your drains

Your water heater is collecting sediment in the bottom of the tank, insulating the burner from the water and quietly destroying its efficiency. Your fixtures are crusting. Your dishwasher and washing machine are working against it. Your glasses come out of the dishwasher spotty, and your showerhead clogs.

Cleaning the drain solves today. A water softener or whole-home filtration system slows down the thing that’s causing all of it — across the whole house.

It isn’t always scale

Why do my drains clog again a few months after being cleared?

Almost always mineral scale, especially on well water. Snaking bores through the blockage but leaves the scale, and that rough wall catches the next thing. Hydro jetting removes the scale itself.

Does well water really cause drain problems?

Indirectly, yes — the mineral load builds scale inside the pipe, narrowing it and roughening the wall so it grabs debris. It’s the most common underlying cause we see in Anderson.

Would a water softener actually help?
