January 6, 2020

You’ve heard of the phrase “new year, new me.” We’re turning that into, “new year, new home.” If tidying up was at the top of your list of going into 2020, we’ve got the tips and tricks to help you stick to your resolution. Today, we’re sharing what you need to know to keep a clean and organized home that would even make Marie Kondo proud.

Start room by room

One of the hardest parts of creating new habits is the starting point. It can be daunting when you feel like you have a mountain of clothes, clutter, and dishes ahead of you. This is why we recommend beginning with your most lived-in room or area and working down from there.

Clear the clutter

There’s no easier way to get more organized than clearing out the clutter. It may be hard to let go of some beloved items, but without purging, your home can seem overcrowded.

Start this process by tossing out useless items first. This includes anything from expired makeup, old holiday cards, used notebooks, and broken electronics that have piled up. When you are clearing up space ask yourself, “Do I love this item?” and “Do I use it regularly?” If the answer is “No,” then you should donate or toss it.

Set a daily schedule

Creating a daily system for yourself and sticking to it can help prevent bigger messes. Here are some examples of what you can do every day:

Daily:

  • Make your bed every morning.
  • Load the dishwasher every night and try not to let any dirty dishes sit overnight.
  • Put all your dirty clothes in the hamper and make sure clean clothes are hung and folded.
  • Make sure everything is in its designated place and not laying out.

Create a clean environment

Do you notice dust accumulating what feels like every minute? Despite your toughest cleaning efforts, the pile-up is persistent. The likely culprit is your HVAC system. When homeowners neglect to replace their system’s air filter, it can result in allergies and an excess amount of dust particles throughout the house. Luckily, with seasonal maintenance, you can increase the comfort of your home and improve the indoor air quality. Say sayonara to dust!
